frequently ask questions
Q: “Turn Up, Turn Out!” (TUTO) encourages people to check their registration status…why not just register them to vote?
A: The fact is, no one can register a voter other than a voter’s secretary of state or designated proxy. We encourage voter registration checks, and if a person is not registered (or not registered at their current address), we provide them with the option to connect to resources they need to complete their registration process through their secretary of state’s office.

Q: Isn’t it illegal to pay someone to register to vote or vote?
A: Yes. While this FAQ is not legal advice, it is illegal to pay someone to register to vote. TUTO sweepstakes are conducted in compliance with applicable laws. We offer incentives for individuals to check their registration status. Nothing more is required or asked of participants. Once the check is complete, entrants can opt out of further communications. If they remain opted in, they will receive non-partisan election reminders (upcoming registration deadlines, early vote dates, polling place location information, etc), but no further incentives are offered or are contingent upon remaining in communication with TUTO or All Americans Vote.
Q: What does TUTO do with my data?
A: Personal data is used to match to the publicly available voter files in order to determine an entrant’s voter registration status. The data is never sold or monetized in any way. Entrants can opt out of future communications (described above) at any time.

Q: What if my state has newly enacted election laws that prohibit certain types of outreach?
A: All Americans Vote is a federally recognized 501 c3 public charity. As such, we retain legal counsel to ensure that we are always in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws. All programs are thoroughly vetted and continually updated/modified as appropriate and in line with all legal requirements.
